My GC, Thalal Beer, was so great that I specifically signed up for a brownstoner account just so I could post about him. I read about him here, and called him based on the enthusiastic reviews he received, and I want to add mine!
I called a few contractors before I found Beer. Three of them came over, looked at the project, and then would not call me back. Beer’s price was fair, he was such a pleasure to work with, and he finished the project beautifully and on time as well. I can’t say enough good things about him.
My project was a redo of my back porch where the skylight had been leaking and totally rotted out the ceiling of the screened in porch. He replaced the ceiling, removed old iron railings and replaced them with wood railings, and he did a lovely job. He also has great taste and his recommendations were right on. He cleaned up every day and did a wonderful job making sure everything was perfect. He is such a friendly and trustworthy guy also- and that’s a big deal when you give someone free reign of your house while you’re at work. I would hire him again in a second.
Beer, 646-358-6118. Also he is licensed and insured, which is a big plus. If you have any questions I would be happy to answer them.

  1. I had a really bad experience with Beer. I had a good impression of him and his work at the beginning. We were agreed with the price he set up after we discussed what I wanted to do. And he mentioned about he is having a hard time with his finance, So I gave him the last check before he completed the project and also gave him additional 2G which he claimed it as a tip. However it seems like he under estimated the amount of work, and after a while he stopped coming in for several weeks. I had to call him from the different number to catch him so he don’t recognize. He said I cheated on the price and too much work, blah blah.. I was simply disappointed what he said to me, because I thought we were getting along well, I was trusting his work, And I tried my best to provide him the comfortable atmosphere while he was working on my place.. So yeh.. He has never finished my apt completely.. and he lost my trust.. and most likely he was not professional enough for me…

  2. We didn’t have a paper contract or drawings, but it was a relatively small project (4-5 days). He would normally have a paper contract. He brought over some samples of different woods for the ceiling that we could choose from and we went from there. All I can say is, I am going to redo my kitchen and I am definitely going to call him when I do. I think other people have posted about him on here with photos of their more extensive renos….

  3. Can I ask, was there a paper contract for the work? drawings? Curious how the scope of work was documented as we will be embarking on renovations soon ourselves.
Would love to see pics if you have some!
