Who’s doing exterior doors these days?

I’d like to replace my 1960s vintage metal door/storm door with something nicer, preferably a step above Home Depot.

This is in the South Slope, no historic issues, just need a really solid heavy wood door and accompanying storm door, to keep the fuzz away from the meth lab.

Anyone know of a good contractor who can assist with sourcing and sizing the door, and installing it?

Current door is 30″ x 80″.

  1. I’m currently working on a similar project with Steve Cymbalsky of the Tinker’s wagon and can’t recommend him highly enough. He helped us source a new wood and glass, insulated patio door from Simpson Door which we ordered through Dykes Lumber in Brooklyn. He has already installed the patio door, while insulating and refitting trim inside and out, and is helping us repair the exterior masonry as well. He also installed for us a restored pair of brownstone entry doors from Amighini in Jersey City. The work looks great and Steve is an especially nice, talented and knowledgeable person to work with.
    I’ll post some pics soon.

  2. I called Diane, @ OldeGoodThings.com.
They deliver to Brooklyn. A site they frequent is PS 321 (around
    2nd Str/7th Ave).
Diane described, exactly, the condition of the various doors
    that I bought from them.

  3. denton,

I got my salvaged door from…

    http://www.archantiquities.com/doors/index.php

    Shipping was about $400+

I had a modern, insulated glass door with a screen installed going to my deck. Including removing the old window and reworking the masonry it was about $3000 I believe. I would have to check to be sure. it did include a high quality door with one of those bolt action mechanisms though (not want you want for an entry door).

  4. If you want salvage/reclaimed entry doors check this site, they usually have some good ones at decent prices (they do not install though):

If you want a new pair in the same brownstone style check this company (they sell salvaged doors as well but also make custom doors) – they do the installation as well and are located in Jersey City:

Lastly try Aiden from Excel Custom Cabinetry, his number is (718) 237-1619 (It’s a high-end custom woodwork shop so they are not cheap). He’s a friend so you can mention me – one of his guys installed my shutters at my Brooklyn Brownstone. They do great work, check out this door they re-created for a Brownstone in Cobble Hill. I took some pics for him for his portfolio of work…check them here…his shop will create and install the doors.
