Hi,
We’re planning to move to Park Slope this fall from overseas. I lived in Brooklyn in the 1990s, my family and kids haven’t. My wife and I are planning a trip to NYC this summer and would like to know of a hotel/bed & breakfast in Park Slope where we can stay for about 5-7 days and get a feel for the neighberhood while looking at apartments, schools, etc.
I definitely would recommend going with vacation home rentals–they’re not as expensive as you might think, and it’s much more fun for a family to stay in one location together, rather than getting 2 rooms. http://www.grouplodging.com
I tend to stay away from hotels as well; mostly, I prefer vacation rentals. My most recent hits have been Costa Rica vacation rentals. Have you tried renting there?
“What kind of a C of O do you need to rent out apartments for short term rental (like vrbo.com or http://www.homeaway.com)? Would a normal C of O suffice?”
There’s been some controversy over in my neck of the woods about landlords operating illegal hostels/hotels/short-term rentals (or whatever you want to call them) in residentially zoned areas.
From what I’ve read on the subject, It seems C of O has to be commercial/mixed-use to legally operate a hotel.
I’d be curious to hear if anyone else can shed some more light on this!!
Another short-term apartment rental site is airbnb.com – although for some of these its people renting rooms, not the entire apartment.

I second the recommendation for Bed & Breakfast on the Park (http://www.bbnyc.com). Not cheap, but a great introduction to what townhouse living in prime Park Slope would be like.
My mom stayed at this B&B at Christmas and had a great time. It is directly across the street from the Park right in Center Slope. They have lots of tourists from abroad stay there.

Good Luck
Another website that lists short-term rentals is “www.homeaway.com” There are many listings in Park Slope, usually in an apartment which makes visiting with kids much more fun than in a hotel room. Make sure to map the exact location of any rental apartment before you send in your money – like brokers, landlords often stretch the limits of the neighborhood in their description of their location…
Good luck.
I know it’s closeby, but staying at any hotel along 4th avenue will surely destroy any notions of “getting the feel for park slope”. What a downer to have to return to 4th ave after a nice day spent closer to the park!
(Sorry, Rob.) I like Arkady’s suggestion of renting an apartment.
