Hi-
We kept the thermostat set at 70 pretty much all winter and spring to keep things comfortable.
Now that it’s warm, does it make sense to turn off the thermostat? It is a 5+2 programmable. I’ve never owned a multi-family (5 family) place and been in charge of the heat for others. What do most people do?
Technically, you can’t legally turn off the heat until after May 31st, if you’re a landlord. I thought it was a ridiculous rule until the past few weeks elapsed!
If the temps stay warm, the thermostat won’t kick on, and you can shut down everything next week.

Like Master Plumber says, it depends on your system, but at our old place turning off the boiler (even though the thermostat was already on off) saved us lots on our heat bill. It made no sense. We did have a separate water heater.
Joshi, you could turn off the boiler but it’s better to set the thermostat to off if it’s a programmable or intelligent recovery type. That way, the thermostat doesn’t get all crazy trying to compensate for a call for heat that isn’t happening.
As for seasonal boiler start ups and shut downs, that’s a whole other discussion and depends on the type of boiler and system you’ve got.

MP, do you only turn off the thermostat, or do you turn off the boiler too? Anything special to do to the boiler at the end of the season, or only when the new heating season begins? Thanks!
Turning it off would ensure the boiler is not activated due to a brief or sudden drop in temperature during these seasonal shoulder months. I would shut it off and watch the forecast for the next few weeks.
