A little homeowner advise:

When we moved the house 3 weeks ago our upstairs subzero fridge was not very cold and said to “vacuum the compressor” we did it, it did not fix it. So today we had a subzero technician out to look at it, he pretty much said that whoever serviced it last broke it and it almost needs a total rebuild. This is a $7000 fridge, the subzero technician said it would be $3000 to fix but still might not work correctly. The technician said it is best we buy a new fridge, now bear in mind this is built in subzero fridge. My close friend used to sell fridges and he told me that most “official” technicians say things like this all the time and that if we had an unofficial technician out he could probably fix it for under a $1000.

Also is there anyway we can get money out of Escrow to pay for this?

Thoughts?

  1. Find out if the previous fridge owners only used Subzero technicians. My parents have had their subzeros 20+ years, and yes they need some upkeep, but my “cheap” GE fridge, broke on me after 2.5 years, so I say Subzero is on the best investments ever. I don’t think you can use money from escrow regardless, but get another opinion on the fridge.

  2. OP, is there money still in escrow? If you’ve already closed, you’d have to either ask nicely or sue the seller, which would be ridiculous in my opinion. If you haven’t closed yet, of course you can subtract it from the price. Have your lawyer bring it up with theirs before the closing.

  3. I am very happy with the look and function of my $500 GE apt size fridge. I thought it was quite a splurge. Except the fan makes so much darn noise. If you spend $5,000 on a fridge, is it quiet, I hope?

  4. Bobjohn, what a howl!!!!

1980s diesel Mercedes were constantly breaking down. And 70s Fiats. Now of course it’s the American cars that have that special selling point.

  5. cmu – Mercedes is Nazi follic symbol and yes I expect car with twice more gizmos to break more then Ford. It is also known that people who pay $65K for the can complain more if something going wrong.

  6. Once I called Audi dealership and asked to buy floor mats for my 4 year old car. They suggested to buy a new Audi instead.

    Sounds like a similar story.

  7. “Do you think Mercedes also really have more problems than a Ford, or do you think that people who spend $65,000 on a car (a) complain more,ut

yes…wouldn’t you? I’d expect a more expensive product to work perfectly. which is why this thread is so amusing to this butter old chap with a chip on his shoulder.

Face it…it’s a status product (Mercedes may fall into the same category but at least a car has a lot more static and dynamic characteristics which may be improved on, than an icebox). And just as with any status product, it’s expensive to maintain (so is a Mercedes…priced a fuel pump lately?)
