A little homeowner advise:

When we moved the house 3 weeks ago our upstairs subzero fridge was not very cold and said to “vacuum the compressor” we did it, it did not fix it. So today we had a subzero technician out to look at it, he pretty much said that whoever serviced it last broke it and it almost needs a total rebuild. This is a $7000 fridge, the subzero technician said it would be $3000 to fix but still might not work correctly. The technician said it is best we buy a new fridge, now bear in mind this is built in subzero fridge. My close friend used to sell fridges and he told me that most “official” technicians say things like this all the time and that if we had an unofficial technician out he could probably fix it for under a $1000.

Also is there anyway we can get money out of Escrow to pay for this?

Thoughts?

  1. Did they say what was wrong with it? “Total rebuild” sounds like total BS. There are not a lot of parts to rebuild. And, many of the parts are rebadged. Mine needed a new ice maker a few years ago. Cheapest price on line was like $600. I took out the unit, got the model off the unit, a quick search revealed a Maytag with the same model number for $150. It has worked like a charm for 5 years.

Despite what others say above and in Consumer Reports, a $1000 refrigerator cannot be compared to a SZ, and they are not more prone to repairs. Do you think Mercedes also really have more problems than a Ford, or do you think that people who spend $65,000 on a car (a) complain more, (b) have no capacity to fix even a broken light bulb on their own, or (c) expect more?

  2. we got a fancy stainless GE fridge that was in the kitchen of our new place, freezer on the bottom, nice clear drawers and deep shelves. I’d guess it was $1,500 new.

I’ve never lived with a subzero but I love our fancy fridge. I can’t imagine spending more than $500 on a fridge, but if you like high-end maybe this is an option?? I cannot imagine spending so much on a repair but I guess everything is relative.

  3. I’d get an “unofficial” repair estimate – there really aren’t that many moving parts & you can get replacements on the web that anybody can install. But, I agree, SubZero aren’t worth it – many friends of mine have had chronic problems.
