We have a new building they are cranking on M-Sat until 7/8pm some days, and its LOUD.

How can you verify they have a variance to perform after hours work, checked out the permit online w/ DOB but saw now exceptions.

My understanding is 6pm is default cut-off for construction unless otherwise noted. Anyone have some perspective on this?

Thanks!

  1. You cannot get a copy or a variance permit online. You can only see if the fees were paid which if yes there are 2 payments on the application fees paid for a variance then they have otherwise they don’t.

  2. The variance permit should be posted on the construction fence.
Normal construction hours are from 7am to 6pm.
Variance hours are from 10am to 4pm Saturdays.
Noise is a separate issue. Contractors must post a noise abatement plan on the fence. There are specific sound levels they must not go over.

Here is the part you are not going to like. Calls to 311 about after hours work including weekends will most often fall on deaf ears. The city inspectors show up days/weeks later to check up on your complaint. There basically is no enforcement. Depending on your police precinct, you might have better luck calling the cops for noise/quality of life complaints.

As annoying as it is to live through, it helps to consider the idea that this extra hours work will somehow speed up the entire job so that over time you will suffer less.
