We are having our kitchen redone soon and we are thinking of restoring the built in ‘vegetable keeper’ that is in the in the wall below the window. The door has been painted over and in probably in bad shape andI am not even sure what it once looked like. Any ideas?

  1. Thank you! It has been painted shut, but I would love to see it. There are no vents to the outside, it is a solid brick wall. It would be great to use for my compost scraps. I tried to upload a picture, but Brownstoner would let me. Do you know if it is lead lined?

  2. I think is is a trash keeper. there was an article in the NY Times about it a while ago.
    Did you open it?
There is probably a little vent to the outside.
I chipped the paint off mine to open it and then painted it with a rustoleum like paint.

  3. It’s still (presumably) there, under all that paint. Why not do a quick partial stripping job–perhaps with a heat gun–which will, at best, determine that the door is in good enough shape to restore and, at worst, show it’s original configuration so it can be duplicated.
