Tenants Want Floors Repaired
I have tenants in a RS apt that are complaining that the floorboards move a little bit and sometimes catch their on their socks. I have the same issue in my apt but figured it is just part of having 100 year old pine tongue and groove as flooring. Any tips for fixing squeeky floorboards?…

Am I required to make the floor perfect? I would like to fix it for them, but short of screwing the floor down or taking it all up I am not sure how to do it.
squeaky floorboards are not a real problem within an apartment. Where they can be a problem is for the people living below. If they are complaining about their own floorboards being squeaky i wouldn’t think much of it.
If just a few boards move/squeak they it is worth a shot to get long screws and screw them into the joists below, this should stop the movement.
If nails are coming up they should be hammered back down or have a screw there imo because they can cause injury.
If the wood is raw and splintery in spots you can rub some tung oil or polyurethane to seal it up.
Hopefully they understand that there is only so much that you can do – If i was living there i would much prefer the old (original?) floor than tile or carpet or even a new lumber liquidators floor.
gonna have to go with ironballs on this one – what he said.
Tell them to wear slippers.
go with wall to wall carpet. quieter for everyone.
There are some great web sites that will give you step by step instructions (including video) on how to solve the problem simply. Try this on your own squeaky floors first:
Household Uses for Baby Powder #6-Squeaky hardwood floors
Sprinkle baby powder on your hardwood floors to prevent squeaky floorboards. Buff the baby powder in with a buffing cloth. Your floors will squeak no more.
It won’t cost you much and its worth a try. You can repeat this over and over when needed.
Perhaps inspect to see if finish has come off and floors need refinishing. This will save them in the long run. Won’t stop squeaks though.
Or get them better socks. : )
lay down the ugliest carpet you can find……
drive finish screws through the floorboards into the joists
