Our tenants are complaining that the dishwasher smells bad after they run it, even if they have scraped all the food off their plates beforehand.

It’s getting stuff clean but they say it smells as if it’s not “breathing properly.” Any thoughts on what that could be?

  1. MP thanks, we have a plumber coming over to check a couple of things so I will make sure that is not the issue. Yuck.

  2. I’ve seen some numbskulls install the drain hose to the outlet (unprotected) side of the sink trap, effectively creating a conduit from the dishwasher to the stinky methane sewer gases.

    Not good.

    Repipe drain to correct.

  3. It’s a Frigidaire, kind of a basic model. We were told it was not necessary to install a vent, which confused me, so that does have me a bit concerned. But I will pass on the suggestions re baking soda and of course not leaving other dirty – ahem – items in there.

  4. Rob: Thanks for so unfailingly introducing irrelevant, silly, sex-obsessed, amusing details to such tedious household issues as smelly dishwashers. Reminds me of the famous Newlyweds blooper: when a contestant was asked where the most unusual place he’d made love was, he replied, “That’ll be the butt, Bob.”

  5. Is it a Bosch? This is a known bug. The drain pipe needs to be installed a little differently than other dishwashers so, assuming the installers didn’t read the install instructions, water is getting trapped in it and smelling. It’s a bad smell and it won’t get better til you fix it. It’s easy to fix.

  6. yeah but they didnt specify what kind of smell it is. yes food will cause a rotting type smell, but sex toys cleaned in a dish washer will cause a chemical-like / plastic-ey smell that might be deemed unpleasant as well.

    *rob*

  7. Rob — I don’t know who you date… but I think rotting food would be far more likely to cause a smell than the average well-used sex toy.

  8. I’ve never met a dishwasher that smelled and I’ve dated a lot of them.
