I have a shower drain in a basement apartment. Recently, the sewer backed up and sewage water entered the apartment through the shower drain. Is it possible to install some sort of a check valve in the drain of the shower so that if the sewer backs up again the sewer water will not enter the shower? (I understand of course that the sewage will go elsewhere but I do have a more elevated drain in a non-inhabited part of the basement which is where it would go next but I can handle that.) Thanks

  1. I got 4″ one for whole house. The trick is it only prevents back flow. If water from the street shuts the valve off rain water or the waste from upstairs still need to go somewhere. And it would be in the basement.

So MP is right as always – get one for shower only.

BTW it still can get clogged with something and leak water. Some people put two valves sequentially,.
