Our block is in need of an exterminator that can deal with a recent rat infestation. Has anyone coordinated a block effort before – and if so can anyone recommend a good exterminator?

  1. Rats are a problem not just in Prospect Heights, but along most of the streets that run into 4th Avenue – residents on Butler and Baltic have seen tracks coming from the sewers (during the snow storm) and despite block wide baiting, they are incredibly persistent – the construction along 4th has not helped matters. They were never a problem until about a year ago….

  2. try to trace where coming from an unkempt property, etc
….and don’t put out garbage unless covered and in cans…no plastic bags.

  3. Yeah, rats seems to be on the upswing this year in PH. Some blame the Atlantic Yards demolition/construction, although this may be a convenient scapegoat.

I’ve been looking into baiting around our building as a preventative measure (have seen some rat activity a few doors down). The bait stations and bait are not that expensive – especially if purchased in bulk (about $10 per station and about $3-4/lb for the bait).

If you’re interested in going in on a bulk order, shoot me an email arches at yahoo dot com. What street are you on?

  4. Our block has a rat problem, and I asked the guy in charge of our porter service. He says that he has seen the problem all the way from 11th Street to St. Johns. It’s massive.

We called Ecology Exterminating, but I also spoke with the other owners on the block. Everybody’s got to do their part, including calling all the other owners.

  5. If you want to ameliorate the problem, everybody needs to get involved. In addition to bait stations and periodic inspections, the neighbors will need to be vigilant about how garbage is handled. Metal cans will need to be covered tightly – you may wish to limit placement of food garbage to pickup days. As has been said here before, a cat or two in back yards may be one of the biggest helps. I’ve been pleased with Keith of Rescue Pest Control. he seems to be able to sniff out rats and water bugs – almost uncanny. Sorry, butI don’t have his phone number with me today

  6. Has the source of the attraction been identified? You may want to eliminate that before paying for the exterminator, or you may have to do it again.

Is this in South Slope, by any chance? I know a block there that had a problem but thought it was eliminated.

  7. you talking on the street or the backyards?
Why now happening? – any likely culprits supplying food source(restaurants/bird feeders)?
