I just bought a 2.5″ End Grain Cherry and Walnut Checkerboard butcherblock from Grothouse Lumber. They are located in Pennsylvania but they have samples of their woods at M&M Designs 1864 Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11210 (718) 253-7764. The counter just came in and it is gorgeous!! It was a little pricey though. We paid around $205.00/sf
I buy them from Rosenzweig in the Bronx. Where ever you buy them, don’t presume the type of glue you want is what you will get. At Rosenzweig you have to specify waterproof glue, if that is what you want.
There is a discount restaurant supply in Sunnyside Queens (On Northern blvd accros the side street from the Pathmark) that has dozens of these in all different sizes.
I have two five footers in my shop that I just picked up – but they were used (albeit gently) and will need some sanding to remove a coat of poly and scratches. They may be for sale – but considering the work they need, you may be best to buy new.
You are right not to go to Ikea. While I put Ikea counters in my own house and I don’t think there is anything wrong with the qulaity of them, they are all made of open grain woods (particularly the oak and beech). With some regular maintenance this is ok, but they will still never be a good food prep surface as things will grow in the grain.

Thanks everyone. I don’t want to do Ikea because they don’t offer endgrain maple. Thanks for all the suggestions!
Sorry, you asked about Brooklyn. Rosenzweig delivers all over, and I don’t work for them.

Dykes Lumber. Although Ikea does have the best product for the money when it comes to standard BB counters. Why no Ikea?
