I have an unfinished basement that I need finished. Need to dig down about 2 feet, pour concrete slab, clean and seal perimeter, and clean up support columns. Looking for referrals for someone to do this work. Please let me know if you have someone. Thanks.

  1. The ones that are advising you contractors are the ones that u want to stay away from from….Aodrafting is absolutley right….these are the procedures in NYC
    1) Onsite inspection by engineer
    2) Zonning and total research of existing Building
    3) Plans to be submitted to DOB
    4) Filing Fees
    5) Engineer should( and I recommend it)review your estimates from the contractor and visit several sites that the contractor has worked on.(or at least look them up on DOB website)
6)The Engineer should create a tool box log of his visits and those of other professionals or DOB inspectors…
    7) Final signoff by by all three parties…Engineer , DOB, and Contractor…..

The only nutjob that does this (and I mean it in a nice way)is John at AGPE PLLC @ 347-787-3338

    Good Luck

  2. Please understand you will undermine the foundation of your brownstone if you dig 2 feet. Please consult with a structural engineer before you have this work done. If work is being done w/o the consult and your neigbors find out, you can be sued. My company in NJ was hired by the mayor to consult a dumb contractor for undermining a foundation on a house. The entire left side of the foundation wall came down and the house was evacated and the houses next to it also. For weeks thoses houses was deemed unsafe. Good Luck.

  3. Dobbs – if you look at the archives of Brownstoner – search with google with something like:

    buscarello site:brownstoner.com

you can get some perspective on John & Jim…

And to Denton – Jim’s quote was reasonable and far from the inspiration for my username. That said, doing a comprehensive renovation properly isn’t cheap.

  4. “We are currently getting a similar job done by Jim Buscarello at Jabus Building Corp. Nearly halfway through and happy so far.

    But she’s broke and happy:-)

But seriously, pls see what mopar says, you CANNOT do this without retaining a structural engineer first.

  5. I know a guy who would be great at this but I would not dream of doing this without an engineer and filing. Serious, serious consequences if not done correctly. See MacDonough St. for more info.

  6. i have always heard mixed (many bad) reviews of buscarello. almost used them for a job once, but then didn’t based on that. good to hear two good reviews. anyone else have any input as to buscarello? and aren’t there a couple of buscarellos? who is your contact? thanks.
