We had a relatively traumatic time living in an apartment we just moved from. The apartment itself is lovely and high-end (though some would say awkwardly laid out and overpriced). The horrible time came largely from to the owners. This goes beyond personality clashes (being yelled at for not taking in their parcels when we are late to pick up our kid, being woken up regularly by noise at 3am, and other issues). It extends to illegal action (entering our unit without notice including while we were sleeping, requiring us to pay the common electric without stipulation in lease, ignoring written agreements and lease riders regarding changes to the apartment).
We feel really bad for whoever decides to lease the place. I would like to somehow warn whoever is considering renting this place. Is there any good way of doing this, given liability issues?
Of course, one part of me wants to just move on and enjoy our lovely new house, and let the ridiculous new rent they are asking do it’s job (15% increase over the rental price at the peak of the market). But the reality is that if this was the only apartment available in the whole city, we would rather move from the city and our substantial incomes than live there. And I feel really bad for people who at this price will be expecting to not dread going home every day.
Advice?
If you leased the place with the assistance of a broker, go back to that broker and tell them how bad it was. Brokers talk to each other and it is not worth their while putting a client in an apartment with a bad landlord (although some only care about their commission).
start a website. stalk them. what are you worried about liabilty? if you’re telling the truth, it’s the ultimate defense against libel, as any atty will tell you.
Walk away. Not your responsibility.
true, bolder, but i think it’s a lot worse when you’re living in a co-op or condo with unbearable neighbors that do things like this. then you can’t just cut and run.
Yes, just let it go. Not worth getting involved with such obviously unstable people.
As an aside, this situation is one of those nonmonetary factors that you can’t account for in the rent vs. buy debate.
Not too sure what you’re asking but if it is about warning other tenants, I would say; leave it be. As bad as those things were, they were not life and death issues. You have a busy life as it is, enjoy your new place, leave that bad energy behind and let Karma run its course.
