Does anyone have experience with doorman buildings where food delivery people are not allowed to go upstairs, but residents have to go down to meet them? Is this relatively normal, relatively rare, almost unheard of? There is a proposal in my building to ban food delivery people from going upstairs.

  1. At a dinner party last Saturday I shocked people by mentioning I’d never had food delivered, even once, to my home in the 7+ years I’ve lived here.

  2. I had this situation once and it sucked. Totally drove me crazy having to go down to the lobby every time I ordered food. We revolted and eventually the building changed the policy back to the old days of allowing delivery to go up. What a hassle. Good luck.

  3. another thing to note, a doorman technically not LEGALLY stop someone from entering a building. it’s a bit of a useless deterrant when you think about it. so any food delivery people out there, if you come across a building like this, just flip the doorman the bird and go about your merry way.

  4. Our building has this rule. Instituted after a delivery guy stated he fell on the stairs to the second floor….and sued the building.

  5. I don’t find it shocking a coop would have that rule. It’s definitely more secure for the building residents to do that. But annoying sure.

  6. Most expensive cooperative building in Manhattan have this rule. It’s a security thing more than a fear of menus. It is relatively rare in Brooklyn but I have occassionally heard from residents in my building that they wish the board to impose this rule. It will probably become more and more common in the future. The Boards of these buildings obviously have nothing to gain from this and are doing it at the request of the shareholders. That’s how co-ops work. If enough residents want the house rules changed, they compell the board to do so. It’s not something that comes down to us from the Central Office or Vladimir Putin you know.

  7. i’ve been in some buildings that have this policy and the residents that i knew all found it annoying. the biggest problem that would likely come up is that the delivery people put menus under the doors. that can EASILY be remedied though. someone complains to the building, that restaurant is warned. if it continues, then ban them from entering the building. residents will have to come down only for that restaurants, they may order from them less, etc. problem solved, the restaurant either corrects its bad behavior or loses business.

as for buildings where they didn’t want the help or delivery people utilizing the same entrances or elevators as residents, i have zero tolerance. if they’re good enough to bring you your food, they’re good enough to be in your hall. and anyone who has a problem with delivery people sharing their space belongs in a sealed biodome away from normal human beings. they tried to pull this crap in my old co-op in the city. freaking ridiculous.

  8. cmar.. um what? what if someone else gets into the elevator? if im the only one getting into an elevator and there’s food on the floor and money on the floor, im walking out of that elevator with a full stomach and a little richer
