I am about to replace 100 years old oil boiler with gas one. I think the job will require:
– removing asbestos-looking insulation from the pipes;
– replacing the boiler
– removing existing boiler (huge) and two oil tanks.
– permit / inspection

assuming that everything else (gas pipes, water circulators, etc) stays the same now much should it cost? I understand that this is hard to say in post, but something with 30% accuracy.

This is ~3000sqft row house.

  1. this is hot water system (two pipes) with single circulator. The hot water for sinks supplyed by separate water heater.

    And of course I listed to MP. Beside I calculate things for living. So far it looks like I need 110BTU boiler.

    How much do you think it will call?

    I will put 1 1/4″ pipe for gas from the meter.

  3. For your own sake, please listen to Master Plvmber. The proper way to replace a boiler is by doing all the calculations. someone who comes in and tells you to put in the same size boiler or just counts your radiators is wasting your money. this is why so many boilers are oversized in today’s homes. money up the chimney…..

  4. Yeah, get it calculated properly. You can probably replace some radiators with smaller ones if your windows and insulation are up to date, thereby saving on the boiler size and energy use. Installing thermostatic valves on some radiators (kitchen for example) will also reduce their effective load.

    Fwiw, my 3000sq ft house with average leaky windows has a 150kbtu steam boiler, reduced considerably from the oil burner capacity.

  5. Is this a steam heating system? You need to have your radiators measured to determine their combined surface area. This is the only way to size and price a replacement steam boiler. Anything else is absolutely a guess.
    And putting back what’s there is big mistake. Don’t do that without the calculations.
