Is it worth to build a Cedar Closet? I am doing a renovation and I was considering doing my walk-in-closet a cedar one. Is it worth? Any experience?

  1. My linen closet is cedar-lined and it’s great. I can’t believe it is 90 years old and my towels and blankets still come out smelling like cedar. A nice smell. That said, I’m not sure how much cedar does for keeping out insects. I found some (dead) carpet beetles in there when I moved in, which are a more common cause of sweater, wool, and fur destruction than moths. And this is with closed cubbies.

  2. The cedar common in building chests and so forth is actually a juniper (Juniperus virginiana). Juniper berries are also used to produce gin and available as herbal remedies.

If you do the project you want to ensure you purchase aromatic cedar, as it is a specific grade and species.

  3. I did some closets in my old apt w cedar. Easy job and not a lot of money. What jock said, Lowes carries t&g cedar, just figure the sf and buy accordingly.

  4. Thanks, jockdeboeraia. What type of cedar did you install? How did you do it? I’ve read some stories about the dangers of that type of wood for humans:

Cedar smells wonderful and it’s moth killing properties are great for lining closets and chests. But some have suggested that the fact that it KILLS moths indicates it is probably not so good for you and me either. Ask your physician for his or her recommendations. Until more research is available in this area, allergy and asthma sufferers may want to breathe easier by avoiding cedar wood.

    Any opinions about this statement?

  5. I did a bunch for my wife a few years ago and she love’s them. When we do the master suite she has already requested those be the same.
