We have a raw cement floor in our basement that we need to seal so we can have our home office down there. The cement wasn’t ground down after application so it’s rough though relatively level with some hairline cracks and a little chipping in places. The color is very ununiform too, so we need something that will opaquely cover the whole thing. We’ve been looking into self-leveling epoxies but have no experience with these, and can’t find advice on any other options. Ultimately, we’d like a floor that looks nice but don’t need it to be showroom perfect since rugs will go down in some places.
Anyone ever worked with epoxy or another solution? And is this something we can do ourselves or should we pay someone with experience to do it?

  1. If there is any moisture wicking through the concrete or humidty coming from the walls/floors you may want to consider a product called “sani-tred”. http://www.sanitred.com/
I used it to seal a basement that had lost it’s vapor barrier. The stuff is amazing. Now the basement is bone dry. It’s also amazingly durable, you can drive a car on it. It covers the floor of my garage upstate.
You can fill small and large cracks with their product line.

  2. There are many epoxy based products made for garage floors that will do the trick. Not sure if HD or Lowe’s sells them yet but here are a few others:

You may also want o use a heavy duty rubberized mat….

The epoxy sealers come in a wide price range. I bet griot’s garage is the most expensive. They will not fill your cracks and the floor has to be clean of any grease, etc (use muriatic acid) but they look nice when down.

The rubberized mats are really nice.
