We’re looking at a place on Dahill Rd between Caton Ave and Albemarle Rd. Could anyone who is familiar with that part of Kensington please comment on the area?

Comments

  1. I think the neighborhood is a good reasonably priced option. I lived in Kensington for 4 years.

The foodtown is fine. Am Thai is rated as one of the top 10 thai restaurants in the city (not sure I agree but it’s better than many local delivery options in better neighborhoods).

  2. The community garden/CSA on E. 4th is great, new places are opening (a gourmet take-out place, the Oak & Iris does lots of community events, 2 daycares/preschools) the Greenwood playground is great and well taken care of, the neighbors are organized and there is a strong sense of community. Church Ave has some gems (a blintz factory! a great toy store, a super international food store, etc.) In all, I like it over there quite a bit.

  3. Hi there – we’re also probably moving to the area (Caton and E 4th) this summer and have been looking at schools/stores/amenities etc around there. PS 130 is having an open house this Friday morning at 9am (you can call their parent teacher coordinator if you’re interested, details on insideschools.)

There are a few decent looking restaurants on Ft Hamilton and a daycare there too. There’s also a CSA dropoff right near there (if you like that kind of thing)

    good luck!

  4. Thank you guys for all the informative responses…
Is that an F train entrance at the corner of McDonald and Albemarle, in front of the Foodtown? That would mean a 2 minute walk to the subway. I also heard that the express bus takes about 15 minutes to downtown. The return of the F-express would rock – I read somewhere that it may happen in 2012-13, fingers crossed..
A good elementary school is an issue (as we have a 2 year old) and both P.S. 230 and P.S. 130 seem to be pretty excellent options.
How’s the street parking situation around there? Also, does the playground get real noisy?

  5. Yes, PS230 still offers a G&T program.

For the original poster: I agree with all of the opinions above. Being on the F-train is not such a big deal. It runs slower, but it’s also very reliable (the screwed up weekends for the rest of the year notwithstanding).

  6. P.S. 230 Doris Cohen School (main building at 1 Albemarle) is a really terrific school, if that is now (or will be in future) an issue. Look it up on Insideschools.org.

  7. Like was said, there’s a good mix of retail, restaurants etc around Church and McDonald, the area is quiet clean and safe, close to the park, there’s a decent gym on Caton and E. 2nd. I’m a big Kensington fan. Only real downside is that slow F train. If they ever restore express service, you’d be set.
