Anyone know the impact of DOB code violations on property insurance claims? e.g., let’s say we have a deck (non-permitted, not built to code) that catches fire, damages house etc and we file a claim. Does the carrier reimburse or do they refuse citing illegal deck as rationale?

  1. My insurance company told me that it is their “option to deny a claim if a code violation is involved.” Based on that statement alone, I try to be as above board as possible.

  2. I think the insurance industry is looking for any and every excuse not to pay claims. So yes, the violation could have any impact on your coverage. Keep in mind they need that money to pay the CEO bonuses.
