I was on the Carroll Street bridge yesterday and noticed, floating in the Gowanus Canal, something that wasn’t there last week.

It was a large black plastic tube, approximately 4 feet in diameter, and many meters long. It was hooked up to some sort of contraption. (Unfortunatley, I can’t describe any detail, as I took insufficient mental notes.)

The large black tube was clearly set up to do something, but I’m not sure what.

Does anyone know what this large black tube is?

  1. Thanks!

The link to the Carroll Garden Diary site, provided by iamnyc, seems convincing.

On that site, a blogger, on Feb 18, wrote:

This is the City DEP’s doing.
They are building an aeration system that will pump air into the canal water with the intent of improving the level of disolved oxygen (DO) in the water. The DO levels are typically too low in the canal to meet Clean Water standards, and are expected to plummet when the Fluching Tunnel is drained to do the rehab work.
The suprise here is that when the city posted notice of this work a year ago, the aeration system was to be located north of the Union Bridge. There is concern about this taking place around the Third St Bridge. THis area was found to have high levels of many noxious chemicals that no one wants dispersed into the air or water.
CB6 needs to add this item to its comming meeting for discussion. The DEP should provide us with a full explination and tell us how they will insure this is a safe process.

  2. But if it’s the Loch Ness Monster it means the water is already clean or he couldn’t survive there so we don’t need the superfund work.

  3. I have seen that tube as well for the last week or so – I was guessing that its a contraption for the environmental testing which the feds began this winter in preparation for superfund cleanup.

  4. sounds like the sort of boom they use to contain oil spills. It may be put up preemptively or after a spill has occurred.

  5. Thanks, y’all!
So, thus far, I’ve received the following write-ins:

    1) The black tube cleans the canal, or
    2) The black tube is the Loch Ness Monster, or
    2) The black tube is a transport tube for the mole people’s submarines.

Hmmm… I’ll have to sleep on this.

If the correct answer is number one (it’s to clean the canal of oil or detritus), who put the tube in the canal and why don’t they put it there more often?

If the correct answer is number two (it’s the Loch Ness Monster) how can I be sure it’s the real Loch Ness Monster?

If the correct answer is three (It’s a transport tube for the mole people’s submarines), how can I get a free ride on one of the mole people’s submarines?

    Thanks!

  6. Denton, that’s just stupid. There’s no way it’s the Loch Ness Monster. We’re in New York City!

Obviously, it’s a transport tube for the mole people’s submarines.
