Hoping to get some guidance on installing track lighting. I am curious if this seems like a job a Super can do (it’s a new, full service building w/ 100+ units) or if it’s better to go with an electrician. If it’s an electrician, any recs would be great. I have seen some on here and have reached out to L. B. Electric, Christopher John Electrical, and another that escapes me. I emailed them a few days ago but have not heard back.

In a nutshell, our ceilings are cement and all the rooms already have light switches that are hooked up to duplex outlets. Given that they are cement, I am assuming that track lighting is the only option.

That said, for the electrical work it seems that it’s mainly changing the wiring behind the walls to go up to the point that the track lighting electrical supply is parallel with where the lights will be installed. Then the installation will require fastening the track to a cement ceiling and connecting to the electrical source – I imagine that fastening to a cement ceiling requires a more care/knowledge than just sinking anchors into a wall.

Thanks for any help.

  1. My mother’s used Christopher John Electrical. I’m not sure of your situation, but in general she’s had pretty good reviews about them. Apparently they’re really easy to get along with.

  2. Not sure if you’re interested…..I work during the week for a contractor……I could do this job in a weekend…depending on if you go for wiremold or channeling out your concrete walls. I tried sending you a PM…but didn’t have any success. Anyways, if you’d like me to come take a look at the job, give me a call…718-757-7079

  3. Thanks everyone – I will try to narrow a list of electricians down and get some quotes. So if you have a recommendation I am all ears.

  4. Also, I want to second ALexSPK’s assessment…..you will need to channel the cement…or use wiremold or conduit…which of course, IS visible

As far as anchoring track lighting..it’s not a difficult task…HOWEVER, plastic anchors…such as rawl plugs/bantam plugs may NEVER be used in ceiling installations….ONLY metal anchors

In your case, double expansion shields….or Hilti drop-ins

  5. I am an electrician…and live in a condo….AND have seen the “simple” electrical work the super of my building has done…..i.e. my neighbor asked me to fix it…lol

In all honesty, I would hire an electrician…it will probably cost you more, but you will get a quality… professional installation.

In my experience, building supers are just general handymen that take shortcuts.

  6. That is a job for an electrician. In an ~8′ concrete ceiling you can either go with track lighting or surface fixtures. Either way you need to channel the ceiling to the where the track is powered or where you want a fixture box. For less cost and mess you can always Wiremold or conduit to the fixture but it doesn’t look good in all settings.
