Hey. Has anyone installed a water filtration system you’re particularly happy with–? OR– know of an exceptional filter building/testing/installation company in these parts–? Or even ordered online & installed yourself or had a plumber do it–? I’ve been doing some research online–think I want to go with an RO (tankless, 5 filter preferably) but there are SO many variables I thought I’d check in with you all. Peace…

  1. I am looking for a plumber to help me either repair an existing but mysteriously malfunctioning under-sink reverse osmosis water filter or, if repair is not possible, to help me install a new RO filter.

Can anyone recommend a great plumber who has experience working with these systems?

    Thanks!

  2. CMU–don’t be fooled about the quality of Brooklyn tap water…I have a rudimentary 1 cartridge filter in the Heights that I change every week because it turns BLACK… can’t imagine it’s better in gowanus… not to mention the recent studies about trace pharmaceuticals in all U.S. drinking water.
And yeah, there was a little hostility in your tone challenging OPs reason for asking…YES, many filters are over-rated… that’s probably why gflam was seeking advice..?

  3. Everpure is a great undersink filter. I also have it piped to the icemaker.

I use the H-54 cartridges. Filters out lead, giardia, Cryptosporidium and anything 1/2 micron or larger.

if you search the internet the cartridges can be as low as $45.00 each (including shipping). I go through about 2 a year in a 2 adult household.

  4. gowanusflamingo,

I do not see much negativism coming from cmu in this thread or on this forum in general. He is very helpful and I hope you will reconsider your opinion on this.

  5. Yes, thanks I am considering a whole house filter as well. And I have had my water tested but thank you. As for cmu–um I got the subtext of your condescending query. I just found it obnoxious & indirect. I also get that you didn’t reply because you have useful info to impart. Rather you were just itching to put in your 2 cents. I can’t imagine why anyone would even bother to respond that way. You must have a lot of free time. Or perhaps you need to work out your irritation at your spouse. Anyway–if you haven’t cleaned it in 6 years–it ain’t working…

  6. Or you could put in a simple whole-house filter where the water comes in the house. It gets rid of particles from old mains pipes & lessens wear & tear on boiler, ice maker, appliances. Depending on how heavy your usage is, the filter needs changing once a month to every 3 months. They’re cheap & easily installed.

  7. Well, gflam, if you can’t read subtext, ain’t my fault. bobjohn said it all. Water filters are way overrated and mostly unnecessary, so of course it’s relevant as to why you “need” it when you ask for advice.

Incidentally, spouse insisted I install one (similar to bj) and I can tell no difference whatsoever. Also, the filter’s lasted 6 years w/o even cleaning which makes me a tad suspicious as to what its doing.

  8. Thanks bobjohn for that. Btw cmu didn’t actually make a statement about Brooklyn water. Just sort of passively questioned my motives. I could go into detail about why I want to filter the water my family drinks but I really don’t think it’s relevant. It’s ultimately a personal choice. I would just like to hear from others who had also made that choice. Again I do appreciate your taking the time.
