Anyone order soapstone from M. Texeira using their DIY option? How did it work out for you? Easy to install? Were the slabs uniform? My carpenter says he’s worked with soapstone before (not from Texeira’s) where the different slabs came out slightly different heights, and it was a HUGE PITA to hone them down. The DIY option is so much cheaper than anything else I’ve found, I’m seriously considering it, but want to make sure I’m not getting in over my head. I can make straight cuts and epoxy the seams, but don’t want to get into screwing with the height if there is any variation.
Am about to go this route myself within the next 6 weeks. Texeira provides a link to a DIY link at This Old House, which sold me.
Does anybody have remnants DIY kit they no longer need and would be willing to sell?
Texeira is in NJ, and you can go pick out your stone if you wish. There is a lot of discussion of them, and another Maine soapstone outfit, on Gardenweb.com — most quite positive.
thanks for all the comments… I have a sample pack in the mail, and hopefully will find a stone that we like.
We got our soapstone from them but we didn’t DIY. We had our contractor (who were already doing everything else) install it. It didn’t seem to be a problem for them – it was all done in a few hours. The only problem is that I wasn’t happy with how the color looked where they seamed the slabs. Im lucky in that my seams are in the most obscure place where no one would ever notice. But just get the details from MTEX on what to use for seaming. (my contractors used what they use for granite and its not ideal)
We also got 2 slabs from M. Texeira. Beautiful result & no height issue.
Mark Teixeira is in the DIY Home Improvement business?
I did. They shipped what I ordered and it was easy to cut and install. Never had a thickness issue.
If you’re getting a soapstone sink, spend the extra bucks and get one that has been carved out of a single block. The ones that they manufacture by joining pieces together at right angles leave corners and joints that become difficult to keep clean as opposed to the rounded corners and edges inside a carved one.
