Hi,
Looking for a bit of advice regarding our plumber. We had a guy, recommended by the other two tennants in the building, come in to take a look at why our hot water was cooling down so quickly. We have ended up paying $300 and the only work thing that he fixed was repairing a leak on a bathroom faucet that he caused by not putting the thing back together properley on the previous visit.
He told me that he was charging for the materials and labor and time that he spent there diagnosing our hot water issue, but half of that he spent chatting downstairs with other neighbors.
To be fair, we think know what the problem is now, a 3/4 inch pipe that is feeding the washer/dryer (and the valves on the w/d appear to be faulty).
Ah well, I know plumbers aren’t cheap and a lot of them do great work, but is this cost typical?
Advice much appreciated 🙂
Can you guys give some recommendation for a good licensed plumber ?
Thanks 🙂 You have pretty much clarified what I thought. The only labor involved was I suppose diagnosing the problem (turning the water in the building off and on a couple of times) and fixing the faucet (replacing a washer) which they broke to begin with and tried to explain away by blaming the faucet for being too old.
Cheers all.
The amount sounds high. Call a few places and ask how much it cost to replace that part (part and labor). Then add $60 for the diagnostic.
Send a letter to the company. They don’t know what each of their employees do when they are visiting your home. I wrote to a plumber I used because I felt the fee was unreasonable and he sent me a check.
that is ridiculous. I’ve always had numerous plumbers come in and submit bids, with a detailed explanation and breakdown of what they plan to do. The time they spend Dx-ing a problem is on their dime. Sometimes different plumbers will have different solutions or fixes, and I can get them to pitch to me why their idea is better than the next, and then I decide which strategy to employ.
I only pay the one guy who I decide to hire, and only for the cost of the work actually done — not for the time s/he spent putting together a bid.
