Mantel Mirror Value?
Ok, my wife hates this mirror. What is it worth? I have no idea. I think it’s original to the house, so that puts it about 1860. It’s huge. Also going to be selling the mantel as well. Intend to replace them with something my wife actually likes, and yes they will be period pieces,…

Intend to replace them with something my wife actually likes, and yes they will be period pieces, she just doesn’t like these (don’t get me started).
while we’re at it…that faux brass chandelier is repulsive. Is the mrs. ok with that? perhaps tou should move to a gut reno (heh, heh, heh)
We paid about $900 for a hallway mirror roughly the same age but quite a bit larger, and we paid about $750 for a somewhat fancier marble mantlepiece which had been carefully disassembled. This was less than 6 years ago, although I don’t remember exactly. It’s hard to remove these things and they often are broken when pulled off the wall to be moved.
You can go to antique salvage yards or ebay to get an idea what an item like this is sold for retail. What people get when selling themselves might be lower.
DO NOT GET RID OF THEM!
Have you any idea how many people pass over houses that are lacking the original details? Just look at the open house picks and how many people gripe about the details having been stripped. It’s a real turn off for people who are into these sorts of homes. It will be worth SO much more to you when you decide to sell to have them. Please store them somewhere.
Jeez, pile on why don’t you.
Frankly it’s probably not worth anything. Keep it in storage though, this is the kind of thing that has shock value – “Oh, look at that mirror!” But it’s just a mirror.
Move it downstairs, then do some dishes and vacuum. Sorry – that was inappropriate.
Is there a wife swapping booth at the Flea???
I’m just adding one more vote for leaving it where it is. And if you do decide to remove it, go with storing the mirror and mantle, as it adds more value to your house to have the original details intact, if not actually in place. Personally, I’d LOVE to have something this magnificent in my front parlor!
did you know your wife was like that when you married her?
I’m interested in both. Would you please post the measurements of both the mantel and the mirror? Thanks.
