I am in the enviable position of receiving all the woodwork from my neighbor’s gut reno (identical house). I have the opportunity to fill in some of the gaps as far as missing detail in my house goes (alas, can’t fill in my floors or plaster work). But there are oak panels, trim, etc. that I am getting. Now, all of this stuff has been painted over. I can get it stripped at Dip ‘N Strip in NJ but do you have any recommendations for who I can use to get the wood sanded, finished (w/ tung oil or whatever) off-site?

I have gotten some quotes but they are very high (would be cheaper to buy all-new oak panelling). And no, I simply cannot do it all. Would take me decades.

  1. I have done a lot of this. There is no easy way around it. Not only it is laborious, but experienced people can get it done fast. If the molding is very detailed, the stripping will not remove everything and hand scraping will be required. Any bid from a reliable contractor will have plenty of profit built in for additional time required. I would consider the high prices quoted and factor in how important it is to have the real stuff. Buying new certainly an alternative to consider, but personally, if I could afford it I would go with the refinishing process. For me, I would get satisfaction living in it.
