hi, i have a limestone house in Crown Heights. The front doors are in pretty bad shape. I contacted somebody about repairing them. He suggested that i buy new ones but gave me a quote to repair them for $1500. What should I do? Each door is about 26 x 86. Am i better off getting new ones? Where can i go? There isn’t anything in the directory…

thanks!

  1. Definitely check with Eddie’s Salvage on Greene Ave at the corner of Grand Ave. Often has lots of stock, very good prices and is a super nice person to deal with.

  2. Yeah, I would at least check in with a few more experienced old-door repairers for quotes and see what they say before throwing in the towel.

  3. I say keep the old doors–even if they are beat up, the old wood is of much better quality. Will you be painting them? Paint will hide many imperfections. I would try to get some other quotes on repair–ask South Slope who they would recommend.

  4. there’s a place in clinton hill that sells salvaged doors, you might want to check them out. i don’t know there exact address but it’s on a 2 way street, runs east-west and it’s on the south side of the street. I want to say Greene St but I’m not positive.

  5. hi daveinbedstuy. I spoke to the guy at the place you mention. Nice guy, i was hoping to find something local though. I don’t know if i can deal with the hassle of having unfinished doors shipped, having to buy hardware, finishing them and hanging them. I am way too busy to deal with all that…

thanks for the reply though 🙂

  6. I got my door from these guys. I see that they have a few sets that can be made to fit your opening. This guy is good and the doors come with glass and most repairs made to any holes…not cheap but I was very happy with what I got.

Yes, to get new doors made will be very expensive. I’ve spoken with Southslope Woodworks who advertises on here and I know their quality is top notch.

  7. Hi- We were really surprised how much nice looking wood doors cost, and couldn’t afford any new or from local salvage places. But – ended up doing really well on eBay – found a close fit with nice windows for the front that our fantastic carpenter trimmed, $150 incl. shipping, and two gorgeous old arched doors for the inside from an old school in Philly, $500 for both, another $100 to get them hung well. Best of luck – we figured we’d be living with them for a really long time and wanted something we loved to come to every night.
