Hello, I am the new owner of a well worn co-op and am doing most of the renovation myself. My latest project is picking my flooring- the floors in my place are sloping and undulating to say the least- part of it is sag in the joists and part of it is in the many many layers of flooring that has been put in over the years. Because of co-op rules, it is going to be far easier (and cheaper) for me to simply go over the existing floors than to try and tear everything out and build from the joists up. I am fine with having a floor that is uneven, and am hoping that putting a wood floor over it will disguise some of the large bumps. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions on types of wood flooring that can flex and bend enough to sit well over the uneven base, and if there are any tricks to smoothing out some of the major curves. Thanks for your help!

  1. sleep in the floor…locate the joists and scribe straight , not necessarily level fills, cut out of 2×4’s ,and make sure that you screw all the way to the joiost, not just the subflooring…

  2. In one of the apartments we are renovating has 6 layers of flooring! Hard to imagine. It depends upon your situation, but if you really want level floors and your existing is stable there are companies that pour self leveling concrete, then install a new floor on top. Of course this only works if the floor below is not moving.
