I bought and followed all directions for applying “DuPont Granite & Marble Countertop Sealer” (including putting it on twice to start), but I am still experiencing water rings. They eventually dry out, but any wet area (from a sponge, glass, stray droplets, bottom of soap dispenser) leaves a dark mark. As I said, it eventually dries up, but I am very concerned that if something like grape juice spills, my new countertop is going to be ruined. Does anyone know if I did something wrong? Are there better products out there? All advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Matt

  1. Dave–thanks for the info, but this is granite–definitely not marble.

Minard–I am not sure what the finish is. It *looks* polished to me. However, based on my overall project cost, this was probably not the highest grade of granite available (contractor and granite courtesy of Flushing Chinatown). I think that most installed granite (especially not the cheaper stuff) is typically pre-sealed, so that also may be why your experience has been better than mine.

I think I am just going to try another application of the stuff I have (might as well use up the bottle before buying something else–this stuff ain’t cheap) and see if that makes a difference.

If anyone has other ideas, please speak up.

  2. I’ve never sealed a granite countertop in my life and never had any issues with stains. marble is different. One shouldn’t use marble in the kitchen because it does stain. Sealers are not very effective.

You’ll always get the worst stains in white marble, typically around a faucet. the stains come from the iron in the water. Impossible to prevent unless you get a system that filets out all iron, copper and all other metals from your water.

    Anything will stain marble.

  3. I have never had that problem with my granite, so I don’t know. It may be the finish you specified. My granite is polished and is very resistant to staining or spotting. If you have a honed or matte finish, somtimes they call it “thermal finish” it may always wick up water no matter what. I can see how it would be annoying.
