I am interested in putting carpet in my basement which consists completely of large 1’X 1′ ceramic tile. I have read some things that carpet cannot be installed over tile and it would need to ripped up and installed on wood.

Before wasting the time of various carpet installers to come over for a quote, I was wondering if this is something that could be done? Is this something maybe carpet tiles would be useful for?

Thanks!

  1. Sounds like you want to keep the tiles intact underneath in case you or a future owner decides to remove the carpet.

Here’s a solution and I think it’s the best one for a basement anyway because it makes it easier to dry out the basement if it ever floods – just pick out regular wall-to-wall carpet, have the carpet place measure the room and make an area rug its exact size and shape, finish the edges of the carpet, and just lay it on a pad over the tiles. Basically a large custom sized area rug. I did that in our baby room where I wanted to have a softer surface and to muffle noise. At first glance it looks like the room has wall to wall carpeting but in reality it is an area rug and can be rolled up and taken out easily.

  2. Thanks Ed – That seems like it would be irreversible damage to the tile, wouldnt the floor already be leveled from when they layed the tile? It doesnt seem like it is uneven anywhere, I am looking to do as little permenant damage to the tile as possible. I guess I will have to talk to the carpet installers.

    Thanks!

  3. You’ll need to coat the existing tile floor with a leveling compound. Once clean, level, and continuous you may choose a tackless installation or a glue down.
