I have a problem trying to figure out how to keep molding around a door way. It is a standard door way with walls on both sides, but I was considering knocking down the wall on the left and widening the doorway until it meets a perpendicular wall. This would only leave three usable walls for molding on the opposite side.

Is there any trick to doing the molding so that I can frame the doorway on both sides? See the pic attached. The red line is where the molding would normally go except for the right wall.

  1. We have an original doorway with the same issue and they put molding on the left side and top of the door only. Looks ok.

  2. Or….you could frame the opening down just enough to get a molding to butt right into that corner on the right, depending on how large the opening is now.

  3. How about no molding? Make a neat trimmed drywall opening and sit the door within it.

  4. The only thing I can think of is to skip traditional moulding
and get a carpenter to make some decorative rectagular columns
on either side of the doorway. They would wrap around the one
wall and only be 3 sided on the other.

  5. You can frame the right side out further. You’re right, it doesn’t look right without it. presumably the other side is OK which presents another problem of further framing out the right side.
