Are You A No Lock Person?
The Home section of The New York Times is doing a story about city people who refuse to lock the front doors to their homes or apartments and may have had problems because of it. If you have a story email jwadler@nytimes.com. We need not use your full name.

I think they were PEACOCKS, ENY.
He’s deathly afraid of peacocks.
Dave, yes, also in case of emergency. There were times the tenants had to get in to check the boiler, which always seemed to wait until I was away to go out. They had keys to my apartment anyways in case I got locked out (just like I’d always give to a neighbor), so what difference if I left the door unlocked?
“i am not a paranoid person at all”
Do Prospect park FLAMINGOES and HORSES ring a bell?
I keep the door unlocked most of the day, but lock it before bedtime. My boxer Rocco handles daytime security.
“they go across to Canada and everyone keeps their doors unlocked, just because they’re not afraid of the world like we all are?”
Paging Biff Champion! Paging Biff Champion!
“i am not a paranoid person at all” — you’re going to have a hard time selling me on that, *rob*. Did you not just write “what’s to say one of your neighbors who LIVES.IN.THE.BUILDING isnt a crazy rapist? or one of their guests?”
I remember you once said that urban gardeners scare you. Now THAT’S being paranoid.
I leave my door unlocked often when I’m around and my guys are playing outside.
Does anyone remember that AWESOME movie “Bowling for Columbine” where they go across to Canada and everyone keeps their doors unlocked, just because they’re not afraid of the world like we all are? I hate it that every TV news program is centered around stories like “Could your shampoo be giving you cancer?” or “A dangerous predator is on the loose in California…” Stop being afraid of the world and let some of it in your door. WTG Dave in Bed Stuy — and you count yourself a conservative, don’t you?
CGar…my door going down my stairs to the Garden Level apartment, where I have tenants, is always unlocked so they can access my place in case of any emergency or if they needed to raise the temp as well. I’m pretty generous with the heat though.
And yes, i leave my door unlocked as well if i’m out running a quick errand.
When I owned my house, I left either the front door or the door and gate under the stoop unlocked whenever I walked the dog, ran out to the store or to pick up food, went to visit my neighbors, whatever. I also left my Parlor doors unlocked, mainly so the tenants could adjust the thermostat. Never had any problems. OK, *rob*, let me have it!
My doors are always locked and the alarm is always on! THIS IS NYC PEOPLE! I love it here but lets be serious!

I almost never lock the front door when I am home and awake and have lived in the same house for 16 years without incident.
well woop-de-doo for you! look everyone, he’s gone 16 years without incident! i guess it’s okay for EVERYONE to leave their doors unlocked :-/
and i am not a paranoid person at all.. for some reason this irks me tho ahhaha. ive def. not locked the door before while im inside, duh, who hasnt… but i still think it’s a stupid idea for most people to do. there is no way you know EVERYONE in your building.
