Are You A No Lock Person?
The Home section of The New York Times is doing a story about city people who refuse to lock the front doors to their homes or apartments and may have had problems because of it. If you have a story email jwadler@nytimes.com. We need not use your full name.

I can understand not locking your door (I make my better half crazy by not locking our apartment if I’m home or if I go to the laundromat. Our building is well locked, though) but after you’ve had a problem because of it? That is just silly.
When we lived in a 4-unit co-op, our upstairs neighbors never locked their door. It never caused them problems, but it almost messed up the sale of our apt. We just about to go to contract with the buyer, who was already a little spooked because of someone with a higher offer who had then dropped out. Even though I’d told the other brokerage that the apt. had an accepted offer, one agent took his clients to our building without telling us, and since no one was home upstairs, showed them our neighbor’s apartment thinking it was ours. Turns out those clients were friends of our buyer. Once our buyer found out she got quite understandably upset, called the broker she worked with, who then called me in a fury. Once we figured it all out (and the buyer and broker believed my story), it was kinda funny, fortunately.
Those neighbors live in Maplewood now, I think they lock their doors over there…
Anyone who leaves their door open in this day and age is asking for trouble. Burglars are breaking into occupied homes furthermore locked doors. Read the crimes section in the Brooklyn Paper just to get an idea. These robbers are brazen and dont hesitate to do bodily harm. Before they had respect for elders and children and just robbed them but now they are shooting, stabbing or strangling anyone they feel might id them Keep leaving your doors open.IF the burglars dont get you then the rapists will. If the rapists doesnt get you the drug addict will. These are desperate times so take the appropriate measures to protect yourselves or we will be reading about you in the Post .You cannot even leave your doors open in the country anymore. The last days are here people.Get a clue. These are not the days of Leave it to Beaver.

i have not locked my door for damn near 20 years and never had a problem…but i have a dog (sir barks a lot)
One day i was moving some ladies things into a apartment in a walk up, she was on the 3rd or 4th floor, i forget which. She left the doors unlock for me. so i went into another apartment, with this lady giving me the dirtiest look ever and i was like opps wrong apartment.
Silly not to lock. Even if you own firearms, you don’t need to hassle with the DA about why you shot someone.
Someone walked in my prime PS coop bldg not long ago and walked in a first floor apt that was unlocked. Nothing happened cuz hubby was home and they ran off.
But I used to see folx leave the keys in their door at least once a week. I’d take them out and knock on the door. I’m sure they thought I was nuts. But it ain’t worth it being silly.
Leaving your door unlocked is just asking for trouble.
I have to say tho that I don’t use the alarm when I am in the house.
refuse to lock? maybe forget to lock. anyone who refuses to lock should get robbed.
doesn’t the new york times have something better to write about than this?
