Our parlor floor has a similar layout (same width/length as well) to the one in this listing: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/396562-townhouse-327-west-84th-street-upper-west-side-new-york

Dining room in front, LR in back. Our kitchen is a little different. We have a built-in refrigerator, pantry and double oven stack and the rest of the space is open to the living room. We have found it handy to have a small table in the open space for informal dining & bkfast.

Problem – it looks really ugly. I am wondering if there is a graceful way to incorporate a bkfast counter next to the short wall of ref./pantry/oven. Any ideas? We can’t reconfigure to something like the kitchen in the listing because we’d have to move the refrigerator & ovens.

  1. DIBS: I have a wall with doorway to DR (unlike this listing); no wall to LR. You are suggesting enclosing the whole kitchen, with no eating area?

  2. I guess I had assumed from the floorplan thet there were walls on each end of the kitchen but from the pics there are not.

I don’t like this open floorplan look in a renovation of that calibre. Wall it up and just have a doorway on both sides of the kitchen

  3. With the removal of the OldManSam spam, my first post is nonsensical.

  4. I would add the walls like the lisying has. It conceals the kitchen from the LR and the DR. I actually prefer an island (like in the listing) because it’s more comfortable in a kitchen, is less obtrusive than a full table and chair setup and makes for more useful counter space.

I think as long as there’s a formal DR, there’s no need for an extra table when space is tight.

But if you add the wing walls to the kitchen it’ll give both the LR and DR a much cleaner, classier look.
