Hi,

We purchased a new condo a year ago, and although we’re happy with most items, the kitchen cabinets don’t fit with the rest of our home.

We’re thinking about painting the espresso-stained cherry cabinets to an off-white color, but are nervous because 1) the kitchen is the center of our home; and 2) if it looks bad, we’ll most likely end up spending $$$ to replace the cabinets.

Can anyone recommend a contractor skilled in this area – preferably someone with an artistic bent? I’ve searched the archives but have not found anyone suitable.

Many thanks in advance.

  1. Thank you for the suggestions. The cabinets are supposedly cherry, but the doors are very thin. They have warped in sections already (presumably from steam?) and I’ve had to reattach the cabinet doors several times. Since they don’t appear to be high quality, I haven’t thought too much about painting over the wood.

Anthony – I’ll be in touch to inquire further about your suggestion, but perhaps I should just buy new doors? Any excellent vendors out there? (Thanks for the thought, Denton.)

  2. If you choose to paint, make sure that the existing cabinetry is prepped correctly to receive the new paint. You may need to strip, abraid and prime it. Ed Kopel Architects

  3. Please don’t paint the cabinets. Cherry cabinets are great to have. You can restore the cabinets and remove the stain and re-stain with pickling white stain. I would love to see the cabinets and give you some ideas and/or submit a proposal for my services to restore it. My name is Anthony and my email is aodrafting@gmail.com. Good Luck.
