Being OK at “handyman stuff,” I went to regrout part of the tub this past weekend (after a on/off again leak) and found a bag of snakes. Rotten patch job (by the Mrs and I earlier in the year, wunderboard gone awry) rotten wire mesh, wet beam (notched by a past plummer years ago we guess), BX too close to the water lines…and of course the retiling.
Photo attached.
May be a bit more than we can chew (depending on what is found), or want to.
Any recommendations on a general contractor for a smallish-medium job? We may have other worked covered while we have someone on hand (cut off valves, replace work sink fixtures, bathroom fan, etc.), but need someone with more “house knowledge” than the Mrs. and I care to guess/do, unless we have to.
So, plumbing, tiling, drywalling (from the leak) and possible some electrical.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated… and did I mention we have an open shower wall? Thus time is of the essence.
Thanks for all the info. We’re picking someone on Monday.

I just finished a job just like yours. I clients tiles fell off the wall in the tub. I removed about 20 sqft. of existing tiles and green board and replaced with cement board and new tiles. If you send me your email I can email you the pics before and after. My name is Anthony and my email is aodrafting@gmail.com

Works well. My lazy ass father kept a half done plumbing/tiling job protected this way………….for 17 years.
Seriously.

As long as you have the wall open might as well check for leaks to see what caused the wall to fail. Might have been water passing through missing grout or from behind the escutcheon plates on the shower body. Looks like a lot of old galvanized fittings. Might be a good time to install that rainwater shower head system I hear so many good things about on this forum.
You need someone to remove all loose tile and wirelath back to a point where the wall is sound and then patch in a cement board piece to fit.
That black edge may be a decorative element but it is a design flaw… a weak link. That thin black tile has to take all the stress every time you fill the tub and no doubt becomes separated from the backer allowing water to enter.
A plastic sheet and some duct tape will allow you plenty of time to find a good handyman to fix the patch.
You can try my guy. Oleg 347-583-0523.
