Door lock Suggestions
I’m starting to move into a new apartment tomorrow. I’d like to install a new lock on the door to the apartment. Anyone have any recommendations for a secure, solid and dependable lock? Also – where should I go? Lowes? Home Depot? Or any local joints?

@dogpatch – landlord told us to pick out whatever door we want and deduct it from the rent. this LL is great.
Do you ask a corner locksmith to install a deadbolt? How do you know they’re not in cahoots with some robbers?
You should have a deadbolt.
If you are buying off the shelf at one of the big box stores, Schlage makes a decent lock. If you are looking for a high security deadbolt with a key that can not be duplicated, you need a Medco or Multi Lock provided by a locksmith.
If you have an existing deadbolt in place, it is possible to take the cylinder out and replace it. Unless it is a very good cylinder, it is not worth rekeying. A corner locksmith can help with these.

If it’s a rental isn’t the landlord supposed to put new locks on with a new tenant?
ps. it’s a lot cheaper to have the locksmith install the lock during their regular business hours versus this weekend, if that’s possible. it cuts the cost by almost half (like over $200 versus about $100).
from the allstate insurance webpage
We recommend Grade 1 (ANSI designation) deadbolt type locks on:
Exterior doors
Doors between attached garages and living spaces
Garage man doors (even if the garage is not attached to the house.)
i like deadbolt locks. if they aren’t already there, i put them in at every apartment that i’ve lived in. they are secure. you can get them at home depot or lowe’s. as long as they meet the above designation, brand should be somewhat irrelevant. hope this helps!
