I have a steam heated 3 family. The heat works fine when it’s on but the thermostat doesn’t seem at all sensitive. Either I put it up over 70 and it comes on, or I have to drop it below 60 to turn off–regardless of what the temp is outside. I may want a programable one. What does this cost to install? Thanks.

  1. I also replaced our old school thermostat with a modern programmable one. Makes a ton of difference when you wake up in the morning!

It’s really really easy. Just remember to note which wires/colors go where. The new thermostat you buy should even come with stickers that you can use to label the wires that you remove from your old thermostat. It cost me about $40 for the thermostat, and less than 10 minutes to install it.

Also, check if the thermostat you buy comes with a battery or not. Ours was “batteries not included” and I had to scrounge for a AAA before I could fire the thing up and see if it was installed correctly.

  2. I’m with bkrules, this is a pretty painless DIY project. Though One tip, most thermostats aren’t mounted to anything but the wall itself and your new mounting holes probably won’t line up with the old one. If your on top of a stud your golden. If not you’re going to need an anchor. For drywall the best anchor for this application is a screw in type that looks like a white christmas tree. For plaster I would shoot for the lathe.
