Hey Brownstoners,

I’m trying to buy a small 2-story, one family in queens that has a wicked old forced air system with one big vent for the whole house. We don’t have much $$ but obviously we need to have heat. What is a good ballpark cost for installing a new boiler, radiators and piping for a 1,000 sq/foot home? Also. any recommendations for heating companies?

Thanks!

  1. I am looking for someone reliable and priced fairly to replace a 30 year old gas heating system with a more efficient updated one. Any suggestions?

  2. What do you mean by “wicked?” Inefficient?

I’d first ask myself whether you want to change to hydronic; personally I think forced air is fine (and the norm in many places.) So it might be simpler to add ducting to the existing main trunk to get better air flow and more even heat. And change just the heater instead of doing a major plumbing job.

  3. I need to have the same thing done for my 4,350 sq/foot home also. 3 floors and a garden floor. I need someone to give me an estimate also. I would like to have each tenants pay for their own heat and hot water. Its a 3 family. Owners duplex and 2 rentals

    Thank you

  4. Oy, that exact same thing happened to my brother and his wife. It ended up costing waaaaay more than they originally anticipated. This was awhile ago and they are still paying off an extra 20k in debt because of the ordeal. Good luck. Tread carefully.
