I’ve sanded the upstairs floors in my home and they were a beautiful, blond colored pine. Yesterday they were coated with oil based urethane and they look completely orange & black… they look like veneers, or fake, painted wood. Is there anything one can do to coat pine yet keep it from oranging? Regretting that I didn’t pickle them…

  1. Steve, have you had any success staining pine floors dark? I was under the impression that would create an undesirable skunky stripe effect of blond and black — but I’ve never tried it so don’t know.

  2. You might look into a product called “traffic”. My parents had orangey pine floors in their house and refinished them and they have retained their subsequent lighter/blonder tone for several years now.

We also used it in our home but have only had the refinished floors for less than a year.

  3. We had exactly the same sentiments. We wanted to keep the southern yellow pine light. I first tried a tung-oil based finish. Don’t know what I was thinking. So orange I had to sand it all off. Duh. And it was OIL, which meant sanding down deeper.

We settled on a a water-based finish with a hardener (2-part mix as Steve described), satin finish. It did darken the would a bit, but no orange. And it has held up well. I am not sure if I’ll have the confidence to use it on the kitchen floors, but everywhere else, yes.

    Good luck.

  4. I am wondering if water base poly would go on with a clear finish; it does with other woods. For those of us that think that water based poly is not as durable as oil, there are two part mix poly’s (Basic Coatings Street Shoe comes to mind) which outperform oil based finishes.

Pine is a real funny wood to try to stain & finish. Unless one goes very dark, it does tend to orange.

  5. We are having our pine floors refinished this week and I pretty much have the same questions. Our floor guy with ten years experience recommends Minwax Natural stain or something close. Ours are white pine, so we have less risk of yellowing. I know from experience that water-based stain (not oil) will not turn as orange. It will be completely clear. Use matte and you won’t even think it’s been refinished. I am planning to use satin because I prefer a little shine. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
