Hi all —

We’ve got a bit of mold in the caulking of our shower tiles and planned to replace it this weekend. But we just noticed that the baseboard adjacent to the tub is a little worse for wear — some slight mold around the bottom, and some softening from moisture. We want to be sure to deal with the problem adequately. Can anybody suggest a good, honest bathroom contractor or mold guy we can bring in for a consult? Or any other advice? Many thanks!

  1. Hit the mold on the baseboard with a bleach and water solution. The type of renos Anthony is referring to are necessary when you have full on rot, and there are other indications such as a soft floor or walls when it is that extreme. It is common for it to go to the extreme, and if it hasn’t then change some habits so it doesn’t. Intermittently clean with bleach, keep the bathroom dry – common sense stuff.

I recaulked and regrouted a shower recently. There was mold under the old caulk, but it was easy to scrape out and bleach. I will also be returning to seal the grout in about a week. This helps keep moisture from penetrating to the interior of the wall.

The rule of thumb with bathrooms is to not leave standing water.

  2. I had the same problem with my bathroom with mold and water damage to the walls and floor underneath the tub. I had to remove the tub, install new subfloor and cementboard for the walls and new tiles complete. I am a contractor and would like to take a look to see and investigate the extent of the damage and possibly put a quote to perform the work. My name is Anthony and my email is aodrafting@gmail.com. Good Luck.
