Which one has better services and prices? Looking to make the jump to one of these two services and I’d love to hear some experiences people have had with either Verizon FIOS (with phone, internet, and cable TV) and also Optimum Triple Play (with those same services). Thanks in advance for your help- it’s a tough choice!

  1. I spoke to the verizon tech who set my fiber up and he said there is almost no limit to the speeds they are able to deliver on fiber lines. I have a measly 25/15 at the moment, but the techie said 100/50 is indeed possible on a wide scale basis.

That aside, it really depends on who you are. If you spend more time on the internet, you will appreciate the clear fios signal (which you share with no one else) and the applaud-able blazing speeds and uptimes. Compare the bandwidth you get with Optimum and it becomes clear. A 30/5 from Optimum needs their boost technology which comes at an additional 9.99 a month, whereas Fios beats those speeds at a standard offering.

If you watch a lot of TV, I would suggest optimum. Verizon is new to the home television game, while Optimum has been around for a while. Optimum offers more standard HD channels and they own Clearview. By getting all 3 you get complementary rewards including free movies at the cinemas they own.

Phone service is almost identical and the differences are almost negligible. A notable nuance that comes with FIOS is the addition of a redundant battery power in case you have a blackout. It needs to be constantly charged, and it keeps your phone running in case of an emergency. This is a stark contrast to the old copper wiring, where the phone is still live even if your house has no power. The battery lasts for about 6-8 hours, so after that, you are in a dead zone.

  2. All depends – tlocane from 8/30 makes valid points about existing equipment capability. Also whether you want to enter into a contract with Verizon, infamous for its high early termination costs, fees and taxes. Comparing the two is like Visa vs. Mastercard – lean on one, and maybe you can get a better deal. I’m a big sports fan and due to some odd rules one can’t see certain teams in HD on FiOS, so I stick with cable

  3. Before you decide to go with Verizon FIOS, check to make sure all of your current video equipment (TV, VCRs, DVDs, etc) is compatible.

A friend switched to FIOS after purchasing all new digital, equipment, only to find his new DVD recorder wasn’t compatible w/ FIOS. FIOS told him they couldn’t get it to work and he was out of luck … this after spending quite a bit of money and FIOS stating that it was compatible with all new digital equipment. It clearly wasn’t.

He switched back to cable and everything is working again.

  4. You’re lucky to have a choice. Cablevision, which has the CTV contract, never wired most of my neighborhood (Lefferts Manor) and I doubt that Verizon will ever run fiber because of our peculiar phone wiring.

  5. I would go with FIOS. With cable you share the limited cable bandwidth with your neighbors. So during pick time you get slow internet. Besides I am not sure if somebody would hack the modem a little bit and run tcpdump over my network traffic.
