This is a response to the shallow stove post: I am currently having the work in this photo done by Nick at Transcend (the gas line will be recessed through the side of the FP breast). The work is now much farther along and it looks great – I’ll post another photo as soon as I can get my camera working again. 3 cheers for Nick!

  1. I guess I’m lucky that I have a similar set-up original to my house, where the original coal-burning range was set into a hearth that now accommodates my gas range.

  2. This can work well but it is an extremely tricky operation to put in the new supports while keeping the chimney stable.
You need an experienced contractor who understands needling masonry, cuz otherwise you may end up with the entire chimney in a pile in your kitchen.

  3. thanks. Looks like he built two support columns from the cinder blocks on each side and you will not need to remove whole chimney. This is something I really like to consider.

Few questions: how much did it cost? Will you use chimney pipes for the range vent?
