Do I want to put Mexican tile on my bathroom floor? Is there any reason that it isn’t the right choice for the bathroom?

If it is the right choice, where can I find Mexican tile in NYC? So far the places I’ve checked don’t carry any.

I want dark blue tiles, and LOVE the finish of Mexican tiles.

Thanks!

  2. Sounds lovely, neandergal. You should probably keep the shiny ones to a minimum, or have them mostly off to the edges of the floor, since they can be slippery. If you just have narrow strips of them among the matte tiles, though, that might work….

  3. Thank you all (well, mostly all) for your comments.

I do think I need to stick to the classic look of the octagon mosaics. However, I might go with the shiny blue octagons (that will match the thin horizontal stripe at the top of the white subway tiles on the walls). I might even do a pattern that involves some of the shiny blue octagons with some matte blue octagons I found at Essex Tiles on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. (am I allowed to say “Manhattan” in this forum?)

I can’t deal with white tiles anymore, though. I’m just not a clean enough person, I guess.

  4. CMU, I prefer the term “anality,” plus everything else on your list. This thread is _so_ Bad Brownstoner, all it needs is a heaping tablespoon of Excessive Worrying About Lead.

Besides… feats of aesthetic greatness = selectively breaking the rules. Who among us on this forum can see the OP’s vision? I can’t. All I see is black text on a white background. Maybe it’s one of those situations that sounds awful and needs to be seen. A lot of aesthetic decisions are like that.

  5. It just doesn’t go. Like wearing a navy blue blazer over printed boxer shorts and nothing else to Easter Sunday services. Just doesn’t match.

  6. I also think Mexican tile is beautiful but I really agree with Eman, it looks ridiculous in Brooklyn. Save it for Mexico, or a neo-Mediteranean villa in California. Particularly if you have a historic townhouse. Stick to the plain black and white subway tile look in a city townhouse. You won’t regret it and it really helps the resale value.

Friends of mine were going to re-do their Bed Stuy Victorian bathroom in multicolored glass tile. Their contractor talked them out of it. Now they have a stunning white and black bathroom. Looks very elegant and period appropriate.
