Cost of BK Car Insurance?
Hi – Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what it costs to insure a car in Brooklyn? I realize there are a lot of variables, but even just a range would be helpful. Assume it’s an ordinary mid-range car (nothing luxurious), parked in a garage, not on the street. (I’ve never owned a…
Hi – Can anyone give me a ballpark figure of what it costs to insure a car in Brooklyn? I realize there are a lot of variables, but even just a range would be helpful. Assume it’s an ordinary mid-range car (nothing luxurious), parked in a garage, not on the street.
(I’ve never owned a car and literally have no idea if we’re talking 100s, 1000s, etc. per year…)
Thanks!!
Yu can get online quotes from companys such as geico, allstate, and progressive to get a ballpark.
We went through this process and one thing I can tell you is because you do not have previous insurance coverage, your premium will be 2-3X higher for your first year or so of coverage.
$1200 a year for full coverage through AIG now called 21st Century Insurance. 12 year old Volvo parked on the street, never made a claim, clean record. $500 deductible.
we’re paying about $600/year for liability ONLY for a 1994 toyota corolla. I’m surprised how much everyone else is paying, but we got the car for free, so there was no sense in getting comprehensive coverage.
In addition to low insurance costs, the great thing about a beater is that the two times our car was broken into, someone broke in and put stuff IN our car. Nothing was missing. Gotta love Brooklyn. Our car was broken into in Chelsea a few years back and they stole everything, including the @*#!)&$ cupholders, which cost more than $100 to replace.
Now you have to ask how much parking costs!
Yippee, we just got new insurance for $100/month. Well, that should help eliminate those late-night/early-morning, angst-filled conversations about how New York is just “too expensive” and we’ve got to find some other kind of employment.
THANK YOU FOR THIS POST.
Geez, we pay $350 a month.
you might get from reading this that auto insurance is basically 2 part. Liability and collision.
Collision (optional as long as car is paid for) is mostly the bigger share and varies greatly by cost of auto insured/age of auto and drivers record and deductible.
Liability is required. Some people here are saying $100+ per month.
As new insuree you’ll probably be on higher end. Easy enough to get quotes…once have model/make/etc of car.
Thanks all! This has been very helpful. We’re debating making the switch to ownership from Zipcar–much as I am a fan of Zipcar, I feel like it’s gotten quite expensive. A couple weekend rentals a month (esp. since we usually need their larger vehicles) seems to be getting close to the cost of ownership…
I pay $2200 a year for a 6 year old bmw ($184/month) on Allstate – but I also have my house insurance under them as well.
now after reading some of the above posts – I think I will call allstate and re-neg my rates!
$149 per month = $1788 per year with Allstate for a 8 year old VW station wagon parked on the street. We have a $1000 deductible. Asking for a higher deductible (and NO GLASS coverage) will make your bill go down, but basically you are insuring a car in the most expensive place possible
