Any suggestions for good price competitive places to get lighting, whether on the web or in the city?

I know this ia an open ended query but we are looking for a variety of wall, ceiling and pendant lights.

I have been looking at ylighting, and also looking at stores in the city, but would be great if people have any particular recommendations.

Also, anyone know of a site that tracks lighting sales, etc. I know Artemide, for instance, has a sale once a year in the fall.

  1. Highly recommend Paul Pisanelli of New York Vintage Lighting + Paul’s Lighting and Antiques Has experience with doing many brownstones in Hoboken NJ and smaller jobs in Manhattan. Does total lighting coordination or just one piece. Ceiling Fixtures, Wall Sconces, Floor Lamps, Tourchieres, Desk Lamps…the gammit, he does it. Forget those catalog places……you’ll only run into your neighbor’s lights. 212.873.1635. He can speak to you about your needs and start sending you pics. All his customers rave about him. Try him out – he’s way reasonable & will come to you

  2. Y lighting for sure. Lighting by Gregory was a nightmare for me: poor communication, 4 weeks late with the delivery, etc…Y lighting was prompt, free shipping most of the time, and extremely professional.

  3. I’ve purchased many fixtures from ylighting.com over the years and have always had a good experience with them and I find their pricing to be quite good. A few years ago when we added track lighting to the livingroom, I neglected to change the color option on the connectors I was ordering so my order had a bunch of white track sections, with black connectors. A cust service rep from ylighting called me the next day to find out if that was intentional on my part – or just a mistake. It was a mistake, of course, and they adjusted the order for me and saved me the hassle of having to return them and exchange them for the right parts, which would have delayed our install by at least a week.

  4. Had a good experience with Lamps Plus online.

For walk-in stores I like Lee’s Studio on West 57th Street. It carries modern/contemporary and traditional styles but the modern selection is larger. Its prices on the modern classics like the Nelson pendants are competitive.

Gracious Home is good for browsing, and they have a 70%-off sale going.
