For a roof top deck, would we hire structural engineer, architect, both, either? Any recs?

  1. An architect should be able to address the issues of code compliance, waterproofing details, railing details, safety etc. The structural engineer will be able to address the post or sleeper layout for the deck structure and its interaction with the existing structure. I am a structural engineer and while i would be able to determine the roof capacity and appropriate deck structure layout i would not be able to address all of the equally important issues. An architect will also be able to hire/ get you in contact with a structural engineer.

  2. In my opinion I would hire a structural engineer for an older house for sure for the weight bearing load of the roof. An architect would most likely be able to do the math but a structural engineer would give you the math for sure. An architect would hire an engineer to do the math for him and then do the renderings and design based on those figurings from what I understand.
