I need a gallon or two of tung oil. Home Depot only seems to have small containers of it. Can anyone recommend a local suppplier? (We’re in Brooklyn.)
Thanks!

  1. Tung oil is also a lot of work to apply – I’d go for the easier kind for outdoors.

  2. All of Sutherland Welles products are for interior use, save for the exterior tung oil and marine spar varnish. Those are the only ones that should be used outside.

  3. Thanks, Southslope – very helpful. I’m planning to use it indoors, but – I do have some nice outer doors which I usually use polyurethane on. Could I get use the tung oil sealr/oil treatment for those as well?

    Thanks!

  4. you could but… no, I wouldn’t. This stuff is made for yachts- tighter grained woods. Probably best to stick with Thompson’s water seal and the like.

  5. Oh yeah… The place to buy it in Brooklyn is Mazzone Hardware on Court St. and 4th place.

  6. I buy mine from Sutherland Welles. They sell gallons, but I buy quarts because a little tung oil goes a long way. I use two coats of tung oil sealer with four coats of the exterior polymerized tung oil as a top coat. One quart of each is enough for several sets of doors. A gallon should cover 1000 sf/ coat.
